Our Journey Through the Years
1981 — The Founding
November 1, 1981: The Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association charters Local 27 by merging three locals:
Local 20 (New Brunswick)
Local 43 (Atlantic City)
Local 111 (Trenton).
The merger unites diverse regional strengths and trade specializations.
1980s — Diverse Skills & Rapid Growth
Members bring expertise in industrial, commercial, residential, and specialty sheet metal work.
Work expands to include duct systems, kitchen equipment, copper roofing, skylights, solar panels, metal ceilings, and more.
Local 27 builds a reputation for broad skill sets including soldering, blueprint reading, layout, computer skills, and advanced welding.
Establishment of Training Center (Farmingdale, NJ)
A state-of-the-art sheet metal school is created at the Farmingdale headquarters.
Apprentices enter a four-year training program featuring:
Full sheet metal shop
Welding shop
Classrooms
Computer lab
Expansion of Regional Presence
Satellite offices open in Atlantic City and Trenton, supporting members across nine counties.
Local 27 becomes the largest geographic sheet metal local in New Jersey.
2000s–Present — A Growing Brotherhood
Membership surpasses 1,100 active and retired members.
Local 27 continues to grow, providing opportunities for the next generation of sheet metal workers.
